Dinner, dancing, and general merriment to follow on site immediately following the ceremony

We will be celebrating our union at an outdoor* ceremony on Rita’s parents’ property, overlooking the Braden River. The ceremony will take place only yards away from the spot where Michael proposed.

* Flooring will be limited for the reception and non-existent for the ceremony. We would like to welcome everyone - but especially ladies - to wear shoes that are appropriate for the event (i.e. flats, sandals, etc.).

Rita’s decision to attend Clemson University was not necessarily expected. It definitely did not keep with the University of Florida tradition held by most of her family. However, it proved to be a wonderful decision. Especially in January of 2002.

Both Rita and Michael had decent living arrangements during the fall of 2001. However, seemingly better options presented themselves for the spring semester and they each decided to take advantage of them. This is how Rita and Michael found themselves living in buildings facing each other at the on-campus apartment complex of Lightsey Bridge at Clemson.

Michael moved in with his friend (and now groomsman) John and soon-to-be-friend (and also now groomsman) Jeremy. Rita and her new roommates were also good friends with John. One night John’s apartment invited Rita’s apartment over for dinner. Rita’s new roommates were fascinated with a shirt that Rita owned and dared her to wear it over to the boys’ apartment. Since Rita felt like she had no one to impress (I mean…who was she going to meet?), she obliged and went to dinner wearing a t-shirt that read “I <3 Zack Morris.” And then in walked Michael.

For the next five years, Rita and Michael remained casual friends. They saw each other occasionally, a lot of the time primarily due to John’s involvement. In fact, about three years after they met, John actually tried to convince them (separately) that they were perfect for each other and should consider dating. Both Rita and Michael declined this offer.

Michael graduated from Clemson in 2004 and moved back to his hometown of Greenville, SC where he worked for a printing company. Rita graduated in 2005 and moved to Europe where she began her MBA program. The two reconnected on several of Rita’s visits home to the States. Apparently distance really did make the heart(s) grow fonder because their friendship started to grow and they both began to realize how special they thought the other one was. By the time Rita graduated with her Masters in December of 2006, there was an undeniable connection. On New Year’s Day 2007 Michael and Rita (finally) started dating.

After a few months of long-distance dating between Greenville and Bradenton, Rita and Michael both made the move to Charleston, SC. Michael moved in with John (for the fourth time) and Rita moved in with Colleen, a friend she met in France while in grad school. Rita and Michael spent two great years in Charleston enjoying good friends, wonderful beaches and great food.

Michael and Rita had talked about getting engaged sometime during mid to late 2009. When the two went down to visit Rita’s parents in Florida during late April, Rita had no idea that the event would take place so soon. Michael and Rita went to see Jimmy Buffett with Rita’s parents, aunt and uncle and some friends. It was obviously not an early night. But at 6 a.m. the next morning, Michael walked into Rita’s room and woke her up. He told her she needed to get up and go look at something outside on the porch. Luckily for him, Rita was incredibly pleasant for such an early hour and she obliged without much fuss. As they walked out the front door and on to the porch, Rita commented that there didn’t seem to be anything out here worth looking at. Michael assured her that if she kept going, she would soon understand. They rounded the side of the house and Rita saw Christmas lights in the trees and a path lit by candles leading up to a blanket on her parents’ dock (decorating thanks for the proposal goes to Alyssanne, the Maid of Honor). Rita’s first words upon seeing this sight were, “Now?!?! You’ve got to be kidding me….It’s six o’clock in the morning!” As the sun rose, Michael played a song he wrote for Rita, read some Scripture passages and eventually proposed with a gorgeous ring he designed after Rita’s grandmother’s ring.

Reverend Dr. Ted Land of The First Presbyterian Church
of Arcadia, Florida

Rev. Land has been a close friend to Rita’s family since her childhood. He has celebrated every Thanksgiving with her family in Arcadia. He has also conducted the baptisms, marriages and funerals for most of her extended family on her father’s side. Rita and Michael are thrilled that Rev. Land is able to be such an integral part of the ceremony.

Reverend Tim Willis of Wake Forest Baptist Church
of Wake Forest, North Carolina

Tim was Michael and Rita’s college minister while they were at Clemson. He was instrumental in creating a church community that Michael and Rita so valued being a part of. Tim always has warm words, sage advice and the deepest, most comforting voice. We are lucky to know him and glad he is a part of our celebration.

Alyssanne Vella – Childhood Friend of the Bride
Rita and Alyssanne met in pre-school. They attended the same elementary, middle and high schools but their bond really began to solidify during their college years. The two pretty much consider each other family now. Alyssanne lives in Boston and enjoys photography, chai-flavored things, stained glass, and the color green. Also, one time she crashed a golf cart into a building.

Morgan Andersen-Davis – Cousin of the Bride
Morgan is an Occupational Therapy grad student at the University of Florida. She has thoroughly enjoyed all of her years in Gainesville and Rita has enjoyed visiting her there. Morgan grew up in a small town in the smallest county in Florida and can raise a mean hog. Rita and Morgan love enjoying mariachi music (especially when accompanied by Upside-down Margaritas), Halloween parties, and Manhattans together.

Erin Bishop – Cousin of the Bride
After graduating from FSU, Erin is now back in school in Tennessee to get her Masters in Education so she can hopefully teach Kindergarten one day. Erin is always the life of the party and will obviously make the wedding day (and reception) much more fun. Let's hope she has such a good time that she claps with one hand (a hidden talent)! Erin enjoys Britney Spears, using men’s restrooms, and eating at Taco Bell.

Alyse Costa – Sister of the Groom
Alyse attended the College of Charleston and was luckily able to spend two years in the same city as Rita and Michael. Alyse currently lives in Colorado where she is interning at a Young Life camp. Her passions in life include Atlanta Braves baseball, LOST, and becoming an expert snowboarder. Rita is so excited to finally have a (wonderful!) sister!

Jami Hollingsworth Goodlad – Cousin of the Bride
Jami was always someone Rita looked up to while growing up. When they were little, Jami used to sneak into Rita’s room, pull her out of her crib and dress her up in doll clothes. Fortunately, Jami doesn’t have to do this anymore because she has an adorable little boy of her very own – although I’m sure he probably wouldn’t appreciate those little doll dresses! Jami now works in pharmaceutical sales and resides in Naples, Florida with her husband, Tyler.

Mike Costa – Father of the Groom
Remember when you were a little kid and you would argue with your friends about who's dad was the coolest? Well I hate to break it to you, but you just lost to Michael. His dad can rock out a killer guitar solo, do his taxes, rig a bunch of boards together into something awesome, grill some steaks perfectly, and grow a huge mustache in like 5 minutes tops.

Andy Costa – Brother of the Groom
Andy is the most laid back of the Costa kids. In fact, he's so laid back that he can't go more than a few months without losing his cell phone. He lives at the beach, filling his days with surfing, playing softball, and living the bachelor lifestyle. If you meet him at the wedding and he reminds you of Kramer from Seinfeld, you aren't the first person to ever think so. Once when he was two years old, he hit Michael on the head with a hammer.

John Callaway – Friend of the Groom
This is a picture of John on a good day. Don't worry though folks, he's safe to have your kids around. In fact, he currently attends Wake Forest's Divinity School. He and Michael have played a lot of music together and even lived together four times. Five times if you count the awesome tour around America they took in the summer of 2007, rocking hard and leaving a path of chaos in their wake.

Adam Grace – Friend of the Groom
Adam and Michael have been good friends since middle school when Adam had long hair and a beard and Michael was 4' 10" and 80 lbs. Fifteen years later, not much has changed. Except that Adam now has a wife, two kids, five dogs, and lives in Baltimore. At Clemson, Adam used to always eat his dessert first at the cafeteria. That's just the kind of dude he is.

Jeremy Grant – Friend of the Groom

Jeremy and Michael have been great friends since they roomed together at Clemson. If you ever have a question about Ford Mustangs, Jim Beam, or Clemson football, Jeremy can probably answer it. He lives in Rock Hill, South Carolina with his wife Lindsay and son Jackson. Also, his arms look like tree trunks so he's a good person to have with you in dark alleys.

Bradenton was discovered by Hernando De Soto at Shaw’s Point in 1593. You can visit this spot and get a beautiful view of Tampa Bay at the De Soto National Memorial.

Bradenton is the county seat of Manatee County. It is located on the Manatee River. One of the main thoroughfares running through town is Manatee Avenue. Both Rita and her father were born in Manatee Memorial Hospital and Rita is an alumna of Manatee High School. It wouldn’t be a complete trip to Bradenton without seeing the town’s (unofficial) mascot: Snooty the manatee. Snooty resides at the Parker Aquarium in the South Florida Museum.

One of our newest, favorite ways to see downtown Bradenton is via Segway. As Michael and Rita glide into their future together, you can glide all over Bradenton on a Segway Human Transporter! We highly recommend this unique way to explore the city. Tours are offered by Manatee Segway Tours.

If you’re up for a little exercise, check out the hiking and nature trails at Robinson Preserve in North West Bradenton. The 487-acre Preserve showcases some of Florida’s best coastal and wetland natural vegetation.

Bradenton is also home to:
• World class beaches: Anna Maria, Holmes Beach and Bradenton Beach
• Tropicana (the best orange juice)
• Spring Training for the Pittsburgh Pirates
• Headquarters for Champs Sports, the department store Beall’s and IMG Academies (made famous by Nick Bollettieri
and his tennis stars)
• The band We The Kings

Restaurant recommendations:
Peach’s: A great place for breakfast, lunch or brunch! (Multiple locations in Bradenton, Holmes Beach and Sarasota)
The Sandbar / The Beach House / Mar Vista: Old Florida style cuisine (all located on Anna Maria Island or Longboat Key)
Cortez Kitchen: Florida seafood doesn’t get any fresher than this! (Located in the fishing village of Cortez)
Central Café: Urban bistro (Located in downtown Bradenton)
Shake Pit: Classic hometown burger joint with great shakes (Located on Manatee Avenue)
Duffy’s Tavern: A great beach bar with awesome burgers (Located on Anna Maria Island)
Sweet Berries: Custard! (Also on Manatee Avenue)
